Berthomier Georges

1897-1963, France

Georges Berthomier (1897–1963) was born in Indre-et-Loire, France. He worked as a labourer in the Paris region until he was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 1948. He then devoted himself to drawing. Three years later, he was transferred to another institution in Haute-Saône. He stopped drawing and painting several years before his death.
For the most part, Berthomier painted landscapes studded with buildings with inventive perspectives. Natural features—trees, fields—are fused with the architectural elements. He worked freely, using multiple points of view and changing the orientation of his landscapes so as to reduce the sky to a narrow blue or white strip at the top of the picture.
